Irish-British-west Norwegian montane blanket bogs with Rubus chamaemorus, Empetrum nigrum, Betula nana, Sphagnum fuscum

Description

Tree-less blanket bog vegetation, dominated by dwarf shrubs and herbs (mostly Cyperaceae). Eriophorum vaginatum and dwarf shrubs of the family Ericaceae determine the herb layer, and these are joined by Rubus chamaemorus and to a lesser extent also sweetgrasses. Bryophytes are abundant locally. The surface is rough, but a classical system of hummocks and hollows is developed and Sphagnum species form rarely extensive and luxuriant carpets. Thick Hypnum-like moss cushions are abundant and at higher elevations lichens of the subgenus Cladina are also present.
