E2

North Norwegian coastal heaths (Calluna vulgaris, Empetrum hermaphroditum, Vaccinium uliginosum, Racomitrium lanuginosum) in combination with ombrotrophic and minerotrophic mires and birch swamp forests (Betula pubescens subsp. czerepanovii)

Description

Complex of different heaths (predominately with Empetrum hermaphroditum, Calluna vulgaris, Vaccinium uliginosum, Racomitrium lanuginosum), ombrotrophic mires and minerotrophic fens. In the herb layer the occasional dwarf shrub lies close to the ground. Empetrum hermaphroditum and Loiseleuria procumbens grow as small round patches on low ground ridges at many deflation sites; this causes a striking, mosaic-like and microtopographically uneven appearance of the vegetation. Vaccinium vitis-idaea is frequently present as an evergreen and quite drought-resistant species. Despite the very interspersed and patchy distribution of the ground mosses and lichens in the moss layer, the total number of species at these deflation sites is relatively high.
