E11

Coastal rocky heaths with Ulex gallii subsp. gallii f. humilis in combination with grasslands and vegetation on ledges related to salt spray at the rocky coasts of Ireland, Wales, west England, northwest France and the Channel Islands

Description

Low dwarf shrub communities of Calluna vulgaris and Erica cinerea, that are outgrown by Ulex gallii. Gramineous species and herbs are closely intermingled and scattered in a mosaic-like manner. An important difference to mapping unit E6 is the existence of Ulex gallii subsp. gallii f. humilis, the smaller incidence of Erica tetralix, the rarity of nordic species, particularly Empetrum nigrum, and the increasing numbers of Armeria maritima and Viola riviniana.
